Why Chronic Neuropathy Happens and What Treatments Aim to Improve Nerve Function
Burning, tingling, numbness, or nerve pain makes everyday life harder. Explore how acupuncture and other integrative therapies may support a comprehensive approach to managing neuropathy.

Neuropathy can cause persistent challenges and discomfort. Burning, tingling, numbness, sensitivity, or pain in the hands and feet can interfere with sleep, movement, and quality of life.

Neuropathy is considered chronic when nerve-related symptoms persist for an extended period, typically three months or longer.

But neuropathy isn’t a single condition. Kierstin Beaman, DACM, at Minnesota Integrative Medicine & Acupuncture in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, seeks to understand what factors may contribute to your nerve dysfunction so she can develop a customized, integrative treatment plan for you.

Causes of neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy can have many causes. Diabetes is one of the most common causes, while chemotherapy, certain medications, nutritional deficiencies, and other health conditions can also damage or impair peripheral nerves.

Sometimes, the cause remains unknown, which is referred to as idiopathic neuropathy.

An integrative approach to neuropathic pain

Managing neuropathy doesn’t always involve a single treatment modality. Research suggests that several approaches may help people manage neuropathy and feel better, including acupuncture, anti-inflammatory nutrition, functional movement, meditation, and gentle electrical therapies. Dr. Beaman uses a combination of these approaches to help address neuropathy from different angles.

An integrative approach looks at the whole person rather than focusing only on the sensation of pain. The doctor may consider nutrition, movement, stress, circulation, and nervous system regulation when developing your treatment plan.

How acupuncture helps neuropathy

As an acupuncturist and integrative therapy provider, Dr. Beaman combines the principles of acupuncture with other noninvasive, non-pharmaceutical approaches as part of her Neuropathy Relief Program. Treatment sessions typically last about 30 minutes and may incorporate electroacupuncture, traditional acupuncture, microcurrent, terahertz, and ozone therapy, depending on your needs.

The goal is to support circulation, nerve function, mobility, and the body's natural healing processes. Some of these treatments stimulate circulation and support the delivery of nutrients to the tissues surrounding the affected nerves.

The program is designed for people experiencing idiopathic, diabetic, or chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). She tailors treatments to your symptoms and response.

Personal treatment for neuropathy

Nerve-related symptoms can be persistent, but that doesn't mean you have to accept or endure them. Dr. Beaman’s treatment program typically involves treatments two to four times per week until you reach maximum improvement. We then set up a personalized maintenance schedule that often involves one or two sessions per month.

Because neuropathy has many potential causes, Dr. Beaman works to complement any other appropriate medical evaluation and management. The goal is to understand what may contribute to your symptoms and identify noninvasive strategies that may help you move, function, and feel better.
